Founded by City Councilman Sala Udin, the Freedom Corner Committee was formed in January 1997 and launched the Freedom Corner Campaign with a march in the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr..

In addition to focusing on the continued upkeep and development of the Freedom Corner site, the committee selects an annual recipient of the Torch of Freedom Award.  This award is given to an individual who has contributed significantly to the cause of civil rights of Western Pennsylvania.
