Their Names Are Etched in Granite

Nearly 100 individuals from Western Pennsylvania—men and women, African American and white—who led the battle for civil rights and social justice over the last half-century are celebrated in two concentric circles of the Freedom Corner monument.

Fallen Heroes
The 25 Fallen Heroes, whose names are inscribed in the Circle of Honor surrounding the polished granite "stone of origin," were pioneers in the struggle for fair employment, affordable housing, and quality education. All were deceased at the time the monument was designed and built, but their example of courage and determination inspired all who were involved in it.

Legends of the Movement
Many of 100 Legends of the Movement are still living and remain active in the community. They organized and participated in marches and demonstrations, pressed for fairness in both the private and public sectors, and serve as models for the next generation of advocates and volunteers. In time, more names will be added to the Freedom Marchers' Ring, where the Legends' names are etched in the granite pavers.
